Flying from Jakarta to Raja Ampat
Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) is the most efficient domestic departure point. Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, Batik Air, Citilink, and Sriwijaya Air all operate direct flights to Sorong (SOQ), with flight times of approximately 3.5 to 4 hours.
We would favour a morning departure from Jakarta – typically before 08:00 – which puts you into Sorong by midday and allows comfortable time to reach Pelabuhan Rakyat and board the 14:00 ferry. The timing calculation is simple: allow 1 hour from landing to clear arrivals and collect luggage, 10 minutes by taxi to the harbour, and arrive at the ticket counter with at least 30 minutes to spare.
A late arrival after 13:00 in Sorong means the last ferry has departed. For couples who miss the connection, an overnight in Sorong and an early 09:00 ferry the following morning is the cleanest plan. The city itself is a working port town – comfortable enough, but not a destination. We would not choose to linger there beyond what the logistics require.
Flying from Bali to Raja Ampat
The Bali route is one that deserves more clarity than most guides currently offer.
As of August 2026, Garuda Indonesia operates GA686 direct from Denpasar (DPS) to Sorong (SOQ) on 3 days per week. The direct crossing takes approximately 3 hours 10 minutes – the fastest route from Bali to Sorong without a connection. If your dates align with the operating days, this is the routing we would choose without hesitation.
On the remaining days, the standard connection runs Denpasar → Makassar (UPG) → Sorong (SOQ), typically with Lion Air or Batik Air, and a total flying time of approximately 5 to 7 hours depending on the Makassar layover. A same-day connection is achievable if the first leg departs early in the morning – an overnight in Makassar is not typically necessary.

The public express ferry (Express Bahari, operated by PT Belibis Papua Mandiri) departs Sorong’s Pelabuhan Rakyat daily at 09:00 and 14:00, under the updated schedule active since June 1, 2026. The crossing takes approximately 2 hours in calm seas.
Tickets are purchased at the harbour counter in cash only – no online booking system is available. Economy seats are air-conditioned and shared. The VIP cabin adds a private toilet and a slightly quieter environment.

The private speedboat is worth considering when your flight arrives late, when you are travelling as a couple and the crossing matters as part of the arrival experience, or when your resort or phinisi cruise departs directly from Sorong harbour. The crossing is faster at approximately 90 minutes, the timing is yours to set, and the difference on a first arrival – or a honeymoon – is more than logistical.
What we would keep in mind: the 14:00 ferry fills quickly during high season. Arrive at Pelabuhan Rakyat by 13:00 at the latest. And if you are managing a tight transit between a flight and the 14:00 departure, arrange for a private boat transfer rather than risk the counter queue.
